The Gruffalo Author Julia Donaldson

Julia Donaldson was born in 1948 and brought up in Hampstead, London. She is an award winning children's author and her most popular work is probably The Gruffalo which was written in 1999. The Gruffalo has become a firm favourite with children and adults and was voted the nation's best Bedtime Story in November 2009 beating authors such as Roald Dahl, Enid Blton, C S Lewis and A A Milne.

Originally Julie Donaldson wrote songs for children's television but now concentrates on writing books after one of her songs A Squash and a Squeeze was pulished in 1993. Julia also writes for schools and has written a number of plays. A few of her books have been published in big book editions especially for use in schools where they can be used so the children can participate in the storytelling too.

About the Illustrator

Alex Scheffler was born in Germany and has provided distinctive illustrations for several authors of which Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo is probably the best known. Achieving worldwide acclaim for his humorous illustrations Alex continues to illustrate for many other authors.
